Phosphate buffered saline (PBS) is a buffer solution (pH ~7.4) commonly used inbiological research.

It is a water-based saline solution containing dihydrogen phosphate, sodium chloride, and in  some formulations, potassium chloride and potassium dihydrogen phosphate.

The buffer helps to maintain the pH and the concentration of dissolved ions corresponds to the plasma of the human body. If used in cell culture, the solution can be dispensed in small amounts and sterilized by autoclaving or filtration.

Depending on its application, sterilization may not be necessary. PBS can be stored at room temperature or in the refrigerator. However, concentrated stock solutions may precipitate upon cooling and should be kept at room temperature until the precipitate is completely dissolved before use.
